Market-leading GHG Removals

Each of our BECCS plants will generate up to 21,000 tonnes of permanent GHG removals. But what sets us apart from alternative BECCS options?

Transparency

Comprehensive life cycle analysis approved by third-parties, to account for all upstream emissions

Deliverability

We will be capturing CO2 before geological storage facilities come online - enabling us to deliver GHG removals immediately

Additionality

Our BECCS plants are unsubsidised, meaning our products are 100% additional and customers can claim full ownership of GHG removals

Our approach aligns with the European Commission's pioneering vision for high-quality carbon removal:

QU - QUantification:

Precise. Measurable. Impactful. Our BECCS method quantifies carbon removal with a full grave-to-grave life cycle analysis. Every certificate guarantees the removal of one tonne of atmospheric CO2, winding back the clock on the climate crisis.

A - Additionality:

Our PCH BECCS certificates guarantee 100% additionality. This means every ton of CO2 captured and stored through our projects is an extra stride in the battle against climate change, a reduction that would not have happened without the vital revenue generated from the sale of these carbon credits. Each certificate sold directly fuels a project that actively and exclusively contributes to additional carbon removals.

L - Long-term:

Let's redefine permanence in carbon removals.

Our BECCS approach takes a significant leap beyond nature-based carbon removal methods. We capture CO2 from the atmosphere and securely sequester it deep underground, in the very same microscopic rock pores that cradled oil and natural gas for millions of years. At these depths, the CO2 is held in a dense, stable liquid form, ensuring an exceptionally stable and permanent solution.

Unlike other carbon removal projects such as afforestation or wet-land restoration, where the risk of reversal is heightened by unpredictable weather events and changing environmental conditions, our method provides a robust, long-term solution.

ITY - sustainabilITY:

A model of circular economy in action. Our AD-BECCS project is a beacon of sustainable innovation, intricately woven into the fabric of ecological balance and agricultural responsibility.

We source our CO2 from crop-fed anaerobic digestion facilities. These facilities are multifunctional, producing not only biomethane—a low-carbon alternative to natural gas vital for sectors challenging to decarbonize—but also generating CO2 and digestate. The digestate serves as a valuable organic soil amendment and a low-carbon fertiliser alternative.

Central to our sustainability ethos is the method of crop cultivation. By encouraging the growth of wildflowers, preserving hedgerows, and avoiding harmful agricultural chemicals, we enhance biodiversity around our farms. Our adherence to Red Tractor and ISCC+ certification standards assures you of our commitment to sustainable and responsible farming practices.

Our process creates digestate, which we utilise both as a natural fertiliser alternative and a soil amendment. This contributes to healthier soils with increased organic carbon levels, improved structure and water retention, and enhanced microbial activity. It's a testament to our dedication to soil health, directly impacting soil erosion reversal and boosting fertility while concurrently sequestering carbon.

Moreover, the incorporation of cover crops in our fields is a strategic move to restore the vitality of British farmlands, combating centuries of soil erosion. This approach not only revitalises the land but also locks away carbon, creating a double benefit for the environment.

The synergy of growing energy crops in rotation with staples like winter wheat exemplifies our commitment to diversified agriculture. This rotation mitigates the risks associated with mono-cropping, offering a sustainable pathway for farming communities. Additionally, it means that land use to grow our energy crops also produces food - it's a double whammy of farming know-how!

The BECCS-AD project epitomises the essence of a circular economy, where every element—from biomethane production for energy and transportation needs to the use of digestate for soil health—contributes to a self-sustaining loop of environmental stewardship and resource efficiency. It's not just about CO2 sequestration; it's about fostering a holistic ecosystem that thrives on sustainability, innovation, and responsibility.

Integrated assessment models indicate that large-scale deployment of negative emission technologies are necessary to have a >50% chance of limiting global warming below 2 °C (Smith et al., 2015).

Bio-energy carbon capture and sequestration (BECCS) projects are one of only two technologies that can capture CO2 from the atmosphere for sequestration. Moreover, BECCS enables this process to occur without the use of large quantities of very low carbon and low cost electricity, which makes it uniquely poised to be deployed all around the world.

Purchase of carbon removal certificates generated by AD-BECCS not only provide the highest guarantees of certainty in emissions removal, but also supports continued advancement of technologies in carbon capture and storage and anaerobic digestion, spurring innovation and potentially leading to more efficient and scalable solutions.
